SEA OF LIGHT
Intended to house public offices, the building is articulated on two main volumes: the ground floor, which takes up a great part of the available space, with a parking area hidden from view and another volume on three floors. Over the lowest volume is a large, raised piazza facing the Apuanes on one side and the sea on the other. As opposed to more traditional public buildings, this is a welcoming building that greets, and invites entry, with large windows on the ground floor, the light shape of the building, the elegant materials used – wood, glass, light-coloured sandstone, and the play of light and shadow.
The perception of the sea, it is closeness and maybe even the line of palm trees along the viale Colombo, more than referencehave guided the creative process that then lets us to design a building with horizontal lines, propotions and materials thaat go back to the language of Mediterranean architecture. An interpretation of the Rational architecture of Italy in the mid-20th century, austere, but also transparent, luminous, particularly sensitive to the natural play of the light and shadow. A solid building in it is structural lines, faced in sandstone rendered “light” in the way that it is used ,
especially on the south front, with the contemporary technology of ventilated glass fronts and the mobility of the “brise-soleils” made of stainless steels screening. Along the viale Colombo, the front facade facing the street has a deep and welcoming portico, facade in wood, as part of the inside facades. The idea is to propose technological variant of teak, eternally evocative of the sea.
Above the portico is a large terrace protected from an equally large loggia which opens on to the street with no barriers – only transparency in to the city. The wide space off the street, with two main entarances, holds a large evocative water basin that reflects the internal facades of the building, in order to ideally bring the headquarters of the Port Authority even closer to the sea, indeed, to almost connect it.
